The program to rebuild Newark Schools is well underway. With the $70 million dollar bond issue that passed in November 2004 and 51% from state funding, six new or renovated schools are now complete, as well as the new Mitchell Reese Athletic Center addition at the High School. Additionally, more building openings and dedications are planned for the next few years.

Newark High School Main Building Addition/Renovation

The District-wide master plan will be 51% state funded. Newark is in the first group of Ohio school districts to take advantage of newly available monies under a Strickland administration school construction initiative funded from Tobacco securitization. Tell me more.

Hillview Elementary was the first new school building opened within the community in 38 years.

Approximately 60% of the material and labor were provided by local companies for the recently opened schools.

Bowerston Shale Company graciously donated a brick sculpture to each of the of the new facilities. The pieces are sculpted by local artist, Allen Moran.

Charles Nelson, the principal architect for Newark’s project, was recognized for designing the best school built in the country in 2004 by the American Association of School Administrators. Mr. Nelson is with Legat & Kingscott.

Legat & Kingscott partnered with JBA Architects of Newark to provide the architecture and design services for the Newark schools project.

Resource International, the construction management firm, opened an office in downtown Newark. They are located on the third floor of The Works at 55 South Second Street. Robert Hart is the project manager.
